biography
The baritone Andrei Maksimov enjoys a high reputation for the deep ringing timbre of his voice and his impressive stage presence. He combines technical clarity with deep psychological expressiveness in his vocal art.

A 2020 graduate of the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, Andrei prepared his craft through a series of notable performances at the Conservatory Theatre: Onegin in Eugene Onegin, Robert in Iolanta, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Ferdinand in Betrothal in a Monastery, George Germont in La Traviata.

During his studies, Andrei was a member of the Mariinsky Theatre Young Singers Academy, which gave him even more opportunities to polish his craft. His repertoire during this time broadened to include Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Flemish Deputies in Don Carlo, and the title role in Brundibár. His involvement in chamber concerts and contemporary operas during that time showed his adaptability and dedication to artistic development.

It was for the pursuit of excellence that he went to Italy in 2019 at the Academy of the Teatro Comunale Modena with renowned maestros M. Devia, N. Martinucci, and M. Pertusi. He sang the role of Il Barone di Trombonok in Il viaggio a Reims at the XXXI Accademia Rossiniana "Alberto Zedda," further sealing his international credentials.

In the year 2021 and 2022, he attended the Berlin Opera Academy, interpreting Eisenstein in the opera Die Fledermaus. Andrei won Third Prize and the Public Prize at the 8th George Enesco Vocal Competition in Paris; his voice settled his position as an emerging value among lyrical vocalists.
In the 2022/23 season, as a soloist with the Opera Studio of the Opéra National du Rhin, Andrei performed as Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Captain and Hermann Augustus in Candide, and the Mandarin in Turandot to critical acclaim. The authenticity and depth he brought to such varied roles moved audiences and critics alike.

In July 2023, Andrei was acclaimed for his singing and dramatic intensity as Enrico in Il Campanello at the Opéra de Chambre de Genève. He was a finalist in the Ningbo Opera Competition in China and First Prize winner in the Hans Staud Musikpreis in Vienna in 2023. He also graduated from the Bern University of Applied Sciences, with an MA in Specialized Music Performance: Opera, showing his constant desire for learning and growth in the field.

Currently, Andrei continues his artistic journey by being part of the Opera Studio at the Wiener Staatsoper. Amongst his 2024/25 season highlights is his portrayal of Paris in Roméo et Juliette, Donald in Billy Budd and Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia, among others. His Guglielmo in Così fan tutte and title role in Mozart's Don Giovanni with Vienna Opera Festival at the Musikverein this August 2024, conducted by Toby Purser, came forth shining in brilliance of voice with subtle interpretation of the character.

And the road taken by Andrei Maksimov is one of stability in his profession, and narrating through music and devotion to the opera, come what may.

Pierre Benveniste
Andrei is a versatile musician and composer whose chamber vocal and instrumental works have been performed extensively across Europe, often featuring him as a performer. In April 2023, his opera Barabbas, set to an original libretto by Vladimir Alkhovik and translated into English by Helen Daniels, premiered at the Biel Volkshaus in Switzerland, performed by the Swiss Opera Studio. The opera explores themes of redemption and moral conflict, further establishing Andrei’s voice in contemporary music.

2024 saw the premieres of two vocal cycles: Catalan Melodies, for soprano and violin to poems by Clementina Arderiu, debuted in Bern and was later recorded in Strasbourg; and Another Song of February, for soprano and baritone to texts by Boris Pasternak, premiered in Hamburg. Both works highlight Andrei’s ability to bring poetry to life through music.

Andrei’s upcoming oratorio Poets, scheduled for the 2025–26 season, explores themes of war and love with a libretto based on the poetry of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, featuring a central love duet between the two poets.
